New Paradigm Initiative - Participation
VMRC invites all who are interested in value and performance measurement
to:
- provide feedback on the Re-discovering Measurement discussion paper;
- take part in up-coming VMRC activities and events. Specific announcements will be published on this website shortly;
- participate in the intial round of online measurement profiles, by generating an assessment, viewing the resulting report,
and providing comments on the measurement concepts and criteria. Below are step-by-step instructions for doing so.
The Longer Version of the Instructions
Step 1: Registration
The first step will take about one minute, and involves setting up an account on the BenchmarkActionTM server, which hosts the
measurement profiles application. You only need to register the first time you use the system.
- Please load the following URL in your web browser:
https://secure.benchmarkaction.com/register/ (will open in a new window);
- Click the appropriate radio button to indicate whether you are a first-time user or already have an account on the system,
then enter your email address (in lower case) and click "Continue";
- If a new user, on the next page, please specify a password and the other information requested, and click "Continue";
- You will then be asked for your consent to VMRC's license agreement, which is intended to confirm VRMC's obligation to maintain the
confidentiality of any assessment data you provide, and your obligation to respect the intellectual property rights relating
to the Measurement Profiles system.
- This completes the one-time registration process.
Step 2: Login to the Measurement Profiles system
Once you have completed the one-time registration process, and on all subsequent visits, you may login to
Measurement Profiles at:
https://secure.benchmarkaction.com/benchmark/
Please provide your email address as userid, and the password you specified when you registered.
- Next, you will see an Introduction and User Guide to the selected service, (which for the present
provides the same information that you are currently reviewing).
- Next, you will be asked to select the "framework" or "perspective" you wish to apply. You may participate:
- As a User of a measurement approach: i.e., someone who is a recipient of information based on
the measurement approach, and who relies on it for insights into value or performance.
- As a Practitioner, who may be a corporate executive or service provider responsible for selecting, installing
or implementing a measurement approach;
- As an Innovator: i.e., someone who is involved in initial development of a measurement approach, or in maintaining or enhancing
it over time;
- As a Technical expert or measurement researcher, interested in both theoretical and
practical aspects of a wide range of measurement approaches.
Step 3: Main menu
After logging in, you should arrive at a Main Menu that looks like this:
- Choose "View Measurement Approach Overviews" to read a short description of each of the measurement approaches that are available
for assessment;
- Choose "Create Assessment" to provide your opinions about the attributes of a measurement approach relative to the current version
of the Measurement Profiling framework.
- If you previously started but did not complete an assessment, choosing "Finish Incomplete Assessment" will allow you to select that
assessment and pick up where you left off. (The system records your choices as you go, so that you can stop at any time and resume later.)
- Choose "Update Completed Assessment" if you would like to review or edit your answers for an assessment that you previously completed.
- The "Change Designation" menu item enables you to specify whether or not your assessment will be included in benchmarking comparisons. The
default is that completed assessments will be included.
- Once you have completed an assessment, you may choose "View Report" to see how your assessment compares with others. Details on report options
are provided in "Step 5" below.
Step 4: Create Assessment
When you choose "Create Assessment", you will see a screen that looks like this:
- Use the pull-down menu to select the value / performance measurement approach that you wish to assess. Also, please specify a "year"
for the assessment, which would normally be the current calendar year.
- The first time you begin an assessment of a specific measurement approach, you will be asked to respond to a series of seven "segmentation"
questions. The first segmentation question looks like this:
Your responses to these questions will be used to support the ability to generate segmented reports in future. Please answer all seven
questions, since in this case your data is not recorded until the seventh question has been answered.
- The next screen provides an overview of the Measurement Profiling Matrix, and a listing of the factors
included in cell A1 as follows:
- The next screen provides a set of choices that you may select from in assessing Factor A1.1, dealing with Value Measurement of Assets/Entities.
Please use the pull-down menu to make three choices:
- The statement that best represents your opinion about the current positioning of the measurement approach;
- The statement that best represents your opinion about the positioning of the measurement approach that you would like to see
in the short-term;
- The statement that best represents your opinion about the positioning of the measurement approach that you would like to see
in the long-term;
All three selections may be the same, if in fact in your view the current positioning of the measurement approach, relative to the statements
provided, is already optimal.
- Please work through the balance of the assessment, making three choices for each factor. Please note that you may stop at any time, logout,
and resume your assessment from where you left off by logging in again and choosing "Finish Incomplete Assessment" from the Main Menu.
Step 5: View Report
When you choose "View Report", you will first see a screen that looks like this:
- A "Benchmarking" report offers comparisons between your assessment and all other assessments in the Measurement Profiles database. Select
this mode if you wish to compare measurement approaches to each other.
- A "Multi-user Benchmarking" report offers comparisons between your assessment and other assessments of the same measurement approach. Select
this mode if you wish to compare the opinions of others to your opinions about a specific measurement approach.
(A third option will be added shortly that permits specification of a "segmented" report, which will offer additional
and more specific types of comparisons.)
The next screen enables you to choose among report versions. In most cases, these include a "standard" report
and a shorter "executive summary" report.
You may then specify the "target assessment" on which the report should be based.
- This screen lists all completed assessments in your account. Please use the radio button to
select the approach you wish to see a report on, and the pull-down menu to select the appropriate "year", if there is more
than one assessment for the chosen approach.
- In most cases, you should leave the Comparisons Option at the default setting of "Multiple years".
The final report option enables you to choose between viewing your report online, and downloading it as a "pdf" file.
You are encouraged to update your report(s) periodicially, since the comparative information will be constantly changing
as new assessments are added to the system. In addition, new insights will become available as additional reporting options are introduced.
