New Paradigm Initiative - Measurement Profiles

VMRC's "Measurement Profiles" system enables users, practitioners, innovators of value and performance measurement approaches, and technical experts and researchers to compare specific measurement approaches to each other, and to VMRC's initial framework of measurement criteria. This page provides general information about the system. Specific step-by-step instructions are available here.

Overview

Versions

  • The Measurement Profiles Framework is designed to facilitate assessing measurement approaches from different perspectives. The four perspectives are as follows:
    1. Users of a measurement approach: those who are the recipients of information based on the measurement approach, and rely on it for insights into value or performance.
    2. Practitioners, who may be corporate executives or service providers responsible for selecting, installing or implementing a measurement approach. Practitioners are necessarily concerned with both inputs and outputs, and typically have an appreciation of underlying technical issues.
    3. Innovators are people involved in initial development of a measurement approach, or in maintaining or enhancing it over time.
    4. Technical experts and measurement researchers are typically conversant with both theoretical and practical aspects of a wide range of measurement approaches.
  • In recognition of the fact that the interests of these different categories of people differ, the Measurement Profiles Matrix and detailed assessment criteria are offered in different versions as follows:
    1. A version designed for the User perspective is worded to gather opinions based on a user's actual experience with a measurement approach, and omits the more technical and theoretical criteria;
    2. The version designed for the Practitioner perspective also focuses on experience with a measurement approach, but includes all of the theoretical and technical criteria.
    3. The version that is presented for the Innovator perspective focuses on the design of the approach, and addresses all of the criteria.
    4. For the time being, the version offered for the Technical Expert perspective uses the same content as for the Innovator perspective.

Please note that these criteria will be amended periodicially based on participant feedback, which we enthusiastically encourage.

Initial Round Assessments

  • At this time, participants are invited to complete one or more assessments of the following measurement approaches, from the appropriate perspective as indicated above:
    • IP Valuation
    • IP Score
    • Balanced Scorecard
    • Future Value Measurement
    • IC Rating
    • IC Reporting (e.g., Wissensbilanz)
    • Intangibles Value Stream Modelling
    • Traditional accounting
  • Users wishing to assess an approach other than those above should contact Rob McLean, and we will add it to the list of the available approaches.

Reports

  • Having completed an assessment, users are able to download a report. Three types of reports are or shortly will be available:
    • A standard measurement profiles benchmarking report, which includes comparisons of your assessment with all other assessments in the measurement profiles database;
    • A standard measurement profiles multiuser report, which includes comparisons of your assessment with all assessments of the same approach completed by other participants;
    • A segmented measurement profiles report (available soon), which depending on the options selected may include:
      • Comparisons between one approach and another approach;
      • Comparisons between assessments of the same approach from different perspectives;
      • Comparisons among subsets of the database based on segmentation criteria.
  • Click here to download (in a new window) a sample of a standard measurement profiles benchmarking report.

Please note that the report templates will be updated on a regular basis as we add additional charts and analysis to the reports. We encourage feedback and suggestions from participants.
